Preschool (3 Year Olds-Kidergarten)
In our preschool, children begin to build foundations through active involvement with a variety of manipulative and early learning materials. We believe children learn best through enriched free play and teacher designed and guided projects that help them develop skills and acquire knowledge.
We encourage a joy of learning, creativity, initiative, and a sense of responsibility. Our goal is for children to develop inner controls and healthy self-esteem. Art, social studies, music, math, and science are included in the curriculum in ways that encourage each child's active participation.
Children in the preschool begin to explore our Mt. Vernon neighborhood with walks to Mt. Vernon Square for a picnic lunch or snack, and with climbs to the top of the Washington Monument, counting the steps as they go.
Kindergarten children walk weekly to the YWCA for athletics and dance, and to the central Enoch Pratt Library where they enjoy a story hour or simply browse through the Library's extensive young people's collection. The program for preschool children at Grace and St. Peter's is greatly enhance by its connection to the special events and programs of our elementary school and by the interaction of our older students with our younger children as readers, role models and friends.
